SO WHAT IS THE GREEN NEW DEAL?

The Green New Deal is a bold vision for tackling climate change and inequality simultaneously. That means completely re-structuring our economy to run solely renewable energy while creating millions of jobs, respecting the rights, title, and sovereignty of Indigenous Peoples, and establishing dignity, justice, and equity for all.

In the next couple of months, there will be town halls across the country to collect the public’s ideas and opinions about what a Canadian Green New Deal should look like. This gives us the opportunity to define what it means for our communities at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), as well as nationally.

AND WHAT'S A GREEN NEW DEAL TOWN HALL?

A town hall aims to gather members of the public to discuss and record ideas for what must be included, and what cannot be included in a Green New Deal for Canada.

We will use this information to understand the SFU and KPU community’s vision and priorities for a Canadian version of the Green New Deal. We will also share it with the national Pact for a Green New Deal coalition who will be using the ideas identified in town halls across Canada to shape the national movement, influencing political party platforms and government plans. The upcoming federal election must be a referendum on plans for addressing climate and ecological breakdown.

At the end of the town hall we’ll ask who wants to sign up to keep organizing! If you have any questions, write a comment on this page or contact Abigail at aherd@sfu.ca.
